FILM FESTIVALS UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVALS Underground Film Festivals While underground film festivals, as defined here, were invented by C. A. Passinault and Tampa Bay Film, we dully expect others to start up, too, as they copy (or try to copy) the underground film festivals of Tampa Bay Film. Underground film festivals are usually small, private film viewing and review parties. They are often not open to the public, although that can be pointless if they are not covered, and what happens at the underground film festival are remain unknown. Tampa Bay Film underground film festivals are small, private film viewing parties which are not usually open to the public. They are, however, covered and reviewed by Tampa Bay Film just like they were larger conventional film festivals. As a result, these underground film festivals are just as important, and just as influential, as larger, conventional film festivals. Small, fun, and scrappy, underground film festivals are the ultimate return on the effort of all film festivals. Tampa Bay Film Underground Film Festivals, some done in protest because of the decline of small, cool, one day/ one venue Tampa film festivals, will give all of the larger, more conventional Tampa film festivals (especially the largest annual ones), a real competition, especially with the media coverage equaling the coverage of the larger film festivals. They are the best bang for the buck, and a case of a group of David's (more than one underground film festival series format is planned by Tampa Bay Film) surrounding and facing off with the few, large, slow Goliaths that the larger conventional film festivals are. Tampa Bay Film Underground Film Festivals include the Tampa Bay Film Review, the (possibly one-time only) Halloween Horror Picture Show 2009 (Renamed the Halloween Drive-In, and now scheduled for fall 2010, with an upgraded version due in 2011), and Film Festival In A Car. Many more are planned. Underground film festivals usually have no set schedule, are not promoted beforehand (since that would be a waste of time for private gatherings), and are heavily covered after-the-fact. . Since underground film festivals can be done easily and with minimal resources (a few friends with a stack of DVD's watching films in a living room is all that you need), Tampa Film Festivals expects more to spring up, and will cover them as much as we can.
Online film festivals are popular, and effective. There are quite a few of them on the Internet (and, no, Youtube does not count because of the videos making it difficult to find indie films). Tampa only has one online film festival, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival, which can also be found at TampaOnlineFilmFestival.Com. Paul Guzzo and Pete Guzzo, the organizers of The Tampa Film Review, a badly-organized monthly Tampa film festival series which ended in early 2009, tried to launch an online film festival in early 2007 on the heels of the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival. It could not compete, however, and quickly went out of business. The Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival quickly grew, and became the most popular Tampa film festival, even outdoing all of the Tampa film festivals combined. After it put Paul and Pete Guzzo developed "Are you up to the challenge?" online film festival out of business, it went on to put The Tampa Film Review out of its misery, too. Our opinion is that one of the things that led to the demise of The Tampa Film Review were lower attendance numbers and fewer film submissions, much of that which can be traced back to to the success of the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival. In our opinion, in a span of two years, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival put The Tampa Film Review out of business, and gave other Tampa film festival events enough competition to cripple some of them. That's impressive! There is another Tampa-based online film festival in the works, but this one will be for an international market. The international online film festival will a Tampa Bay Film property, and will spin off from the success of the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival. Currently, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival is the top Tampa film festival, period. It is open 24 / 7, and can be accessed from anywhere in the world, as long as the viewing party has an Internet connection. It easily does has more of an "attendance", and gives films more exposure, than all of the Tampa film festivals combined. This will only increase as the online film festival continues to grow, and continues to give all Tampa film festivals serious competition. Tampa Film Festivals will cover other online film festivals, too, when we find them. For now, Tampa only has one, and that's all that it really needs.
